The Overlook is the high edge of Venturia where the streets end and Vallombrosa begins. From its cliff terraces, the fog line is not a rumor or a story. It is the view.
This is where the Fog Wardens keep watch.
Character
The Overlook is quieter than the rest of the city. People lower their voices here without being told. Some come to stare into the fog, some to leave offerings, and some because they have nowhere else to take a question the city cannot answer.
For the Fog Wardens, it is a workplace: logs, patrols, signal lamps, tired eyes, and rules written by generations of people who learned what not to do.

The Dawn Breach
From Beyond Relief.
On Il Conto in the year 1018 P.N., day forty-five after Maruk Grommarg entered the fog, the fog came over the far end of the bridge with things in it — minutes after his plate came off the duty wall and before the rite closing his watch was finished.
Five of them worked together and did not try to kill anyone: a Darkling Elder carrying something long and wrapped, a Redcap clearing its route, a Quickling working the ropes and winch, a Meenlock using the arcade shadows, and a Yeth Hound taking awkward routes around the dark faces of towers to stay out of the light. Below them, twenty Wardens held a mass of lesser shapes on the fogward span. The wrapping came off a black spike, forearm-length, that the dawn light hit and stopped on. The Elder was looking at the empty notch in the duty wall.
Valentro completed the rite, and the fog took its own back — every attacker swept up and drawn out across the span in one motion. Nobody drove the spike. The wall is intact.
Afterwards, the fog line measured three to six feet closer to the city than it had that morning, against boundary stones that have not moved in four hundred years. The city was not told; the day's crier carried the Mint, the Fishmongers' Guild and the price of grain, and nothing about the bridge.
The light that morning came up over the southern towers. The stair up from the city passes the Fenn stall, where Ottilia bakes and the boy Cesco does his numbers.
